Every Thursday, or sometimes Friday, I share three good things from today, in the past week, and/or in the week or weeks to come, to focus on what is good. I encourage you to share in the comments your three good things too, if you want. Today, as many other times, I’m keeping it simple, and this time, I’m limiting it to today:
This morning I finished Riccardino, the final installment of the Inspector Montalbano series by Andrea Camilleri. It wasn’t the best ending, but I’m both glad, and sad, to be done with the series. Next, I have to watch the TV series based on the books on MHz Choice.
I invited a coworker to go with us to the equinox party at a local winery Saturday that I mentioned last week. Today, she let me know she’d be able to go. We’re looking forward to her going with us, and the party ought to be fun.

Today
I got both a covid and a flu shot about an hour and a half ago. My wife Kim is getting both, plus a shingles vaccine next Friday.
The Past Week
Kim and I visited with my parents, sister, and her family yesterday. My parents celebrated their 62nd wedding anniversary on Monday. We were at their house for that and to go over wills, advanced health directives, and discussions about the potential of nursing homes or home health care as both are 81 and are in declining health. Nothing was decided yet, but at least we all discussed it, and our talk together was productive.
The Week(s) To Come
Starting Sunday, I work seven days in a row, but only a few hours each day for most of the days. Then at the end of the seven days, next Saturday, my wife Kim and I are going to an equinox party at a local winery. Woo hoo!

Today
My wife Kim made blueberry pancakes this morning:
This past week
On Saturday, we got out of town, the county, and the state! We went to a Mexican restaurant about an hour away from us in neighboring New York State, and it was lovely.
The week(end) to come
I’m off for four days, starting tomorrow. After being off yesterday and today, Kim has to work all weekend. But we both will be having Chinese takeout, which usually lasts for the weekend. Sorry, no picture.

Today
It was a short work day at the library, where I work part-time: only four hours, and I got more accomplished than I thought I would.
In the past week
My baseball team, the New York Yankees, swept the St. Louis Cardinals and the Tampa Bay Rays this past week. In a two-game span against the Rays, the Bronx Bombers lived up to their moniker with 14 home runs, only the second time in Majors League Baseball history it has been done in back-to-back games. They also hit back-to-back-to-back home runs for the third time this year.
In the week(s) to come
Besides the Yankees playing the Red Sox for a series again this weekend, with the first game tonight, I also have the weekend off and so does my wife. We have no plans, but I’d like to get out of the small town we live in as…familiarity breeds contempt? Well, maybe not contempt but ennui? Yes.
Next weekend, my Labor Day Weekend starts early with a day off on Friday and then I’m off through, and including, Monday. My wife works all weekend so I won’t be going anywhere, but that’s OK. Maybe I’ll do something I haven’t done in a while: read.

King of the Hill
Sometimes they bring a show back…like Futurama…and meh. But they brought back King of the Hill and hey, it works. Thanks, Mike Judge.
A rare Friday off
I’m off today, since I work both days this weekend so our normal “weekend person” can be off for her birthday. But I’m off today! I wish I could say I had big plans, but nope…
In fact, I’m drafting this from my bed, where I’m about to take a nap.
A rare Monday off
I start off next week with a rare Monday off. My plans probably will be similar to today:

Keeping it short and simple this week
I’m at my parents, who live about 60 miles away from us. I’ve been here since late yesterday morning and will be here through late Sunday morning.
I also am able to see my sister and her family, who live near my parents.
My wife and I are both off work tomorrow night and maybe we’ll catch up on some TV we’ve been meaning to watch, including this documentary.

I didn’t draft my regular Three Good Things Thursday earlier in the week, then I worked this past Thursday and Friday. And yesterday I just didn’t feel like writing a blog post, so here we are.
With it being near the end of the month July and the beginning of the month of August, I thought I’d look back at three good things from last month and hopefully three good things from this coming month.
3 Good Things From July
I survived the heat, as I was able to keep our house relatively cool during the heat waves we had during the month, thanks to three strategically-placed air conditioners in our small one-story house. We live in northcentral Pennsylvania so we don’t usually hit 100, but we had some days in the 90s and a few days and nights that were very humid. I would prefer temperatures in the 70s all the time.
I had a three-day weekend to start and end the month.
First and foremost, today is my mother’s 81st birthday. She is now the same age, as my father who turned 81 in January. Despite some medical issues for both of them (I won’t go into details because, as with “these kinds of things,” it’s easy to get bogged down in the details), they still live at home, with my sister, who lives a few miles away. I’m about 60 miles away and while my wife’s work schedule doesn’t allow me to go over today, I am going to see them both later in the week as…
the month begins with five days off in a row. I won’t be able to get over to see them and my sister and her family until later in the week, but it will be good, whatever time I get to visit with them all.
And the month ends with four days off in a row into Labor Day to end summer.

This weekend, my wife Kim and I are off for three days together, starting tomorrow and going through Sunday. Here are the three big things we have planned:
Tomorrowland
It is the second weekend of the Tomorrowland festival in Belgium and we’ll be watching some via YouTube all weekend. For those of you unfamiliar with Tomorrowland, in the simplest terms, it is an electronic music festival that started in 2005 and has spun off into festivals in Brazil and in France, where a winter edition is held. We started watching it before the pandemic and while we like some other festivals more now, this was our first exposure to these kinds of festivals – and so, almost obligatory.
The Bronx Bombers vs. The Fightin’ Phils
All three days, the Phillies and the Yankees are playing in the Bronx. The Yankees are, and always have been, my team, but I haven’t always really watched games. This year, thanks to a deal on MLB.com through T-Mobile, I’m able to watch games with the Yankees and other teams all season. Kim has joined me, with both of us finding the game not boring like we once thought. Now, she has selected a team to follow: the Phillies, a team which she grew up with became she lived in the suburbs of Philadelphia. The Yankees are struggling, while the Phillies, eh, not so much. Both teams have off today so both teams ought to be well-rested.
Brass Under The Stars
Sunday night, weather permitting, we will be going to a concert that is part of the Endless Mountain Music Festival at Cherry Springs State Park in nearby Potter County. The park is a Dark Sky Park and often cited as one of the best places in the eastern U.S. to view the night sky. As for the festival, it has 17 concerts in 17 days here in northcentral Pennsylvania and the Southern Tier of New York with musicians from all over the world. Sunday’s concert is one of its free concerts.

To my sister and brother-in-law
This past week, my sister and brother-in-law celebrated their 23rd wedding anniversary. My brother-in-law was/is off work all week and besides going to a bookstore and out for dinner on their anniversary, they’ve just been hanging out with each other and their kids at home the rest of the week.
Today, my wife Kim and I were both off work. She went to a local art club, her first time going, then the local produce market. We then watched silly TV the rest of the day. Like my sister and brother-in-law, we are simple folk, I guess.
This weekend I’m off work and among other things I plan on watching Tomorrowland (a music festival in Belgium), which is still happening despite a fire on Wednesday that destroyed the Main Stage.

Yep, I’m phoning this one in, because…summer?
Number one, thanks to blood pressure medication, my blood pressure is staying low. In anticipation of a doctor’s appointment at the beginning of August, I restarted taking my blood pressure regularly and have been pleasantly surprised that my numbers are good. So there will be good things to report to the doctor in August.
Number two, Kim and I were invited to the neighbors for a 4th of July picnic. It was good to get out of the house and visit with the neighbors. It also was good to have burgers and hot dogs, but of course.
Number three, because our library director is going on vacation, we already have our August schedule and I have several days off in a row at the beginning of the month. So I have something to look forward to. My schedule is shifting a little too in that I won’t be working as many Fridays, but I admit I won’t miss. It is a part-time job, but every little bit helps.
